Golf and Tennis
Charleston’s ideal weather provides us with all types of golf and tennis opportunities. There are so many golf course communities in the area that it is difficult to keep track of them all. If you like to golf, many of these communities are an excellent value because country club membership is often included in HOA fees or offered at a discounted price if you own a home within the golf course community — and tennis court play and use of other on-site amenities is often free for homeowners.
Mount Pleasant has several wonderful choices for golf enthusiasts: Charleston National, Dunes West and Rivertowne for instance. Other golf communities around Charleston include the Country Club Estates neighborhood on James Island, Shadowmoss Plantation in the West Ashley section of Charleston, Coosaw Creek in North Charleston and Westcott Plantation in Summerville. These areas are close to downtown Charleston and all feature numerous on-site amenities, such as fitness centers, yoga classes, swimming pools and tennis, as well as nearby off-site amenities, like great shopping, restaurants, doctors’ offices and many others.
There are also some golf course communities that are a little farther away from the hustle and bustle of central Charleston. Charleston’s sea islands — Johns Island, Seabrook Island and Kiawah Island — boast some spectacular courses right on the ocean, and because they are a little farther off the beaten path, the on-site amenities in these areas are unbeatable. Other rural area golf course communities include the Plantation at Stono Ferry in Hollywood, SC, which offers real estate ranging from new constructions, resell homes and home sites for custom building. Located in Awendaw, SC, Rice Fields at Bulls Bay is another planned golf course community offering nature-inspired living with excellent amenities.
If you’re into tennis, then Daniel Island really is the place to be. Part of the city of Charleston, Daniel Island is a master-planned city with in a city and home of the Family Circle Cup and the Family Circle Tennis Center, which provides all types of tennis programs for all ages. The Daniel Island Club community features both golf courses and resort-style amenities. And if you enjoy watching world-class sporting events, you’re in luck. Besides the Family Circle Cup, Daniel Island often hosts rugby and soccer matches at the Blackbaud Stadium, and recently welcomed the Nationwide Tour Championship golf tournament. And Kiawah Island will be hosting the prestigious 2012 PGA Championship. There really never is a dull moment here when it comes to recreational, semiprofessional and professional sports!
